Joining a Pilgrim Paths group trek is the start of something wonderful — here's how to be ready!

1. Plan Extra Days at the Start and Finish

Consider adding an extra day or two before and after your trek. Early arrival gives you time to relax, recover from travel, and get acquainted with your surroundings. Staying an extra night at the finish point allows space for reflection and celebration. Book these with our staff right away so we can reserve the same hotel and room for you.

2. Organize Your Travel Early

Use a flight comparison site like Skyscanner to explore options that fit your schedule and budget. Once you’ve found your ideal flight, book directly with the airline whenever possible. That ensures you’ll get priority assistance in case of delays, cancellations, or missed connections — and helps protect your investment.

3. Prepare Your Phone for Europe

Before you travel, set up your phone for easy data access. Many travelers use an international eSIM, like those from Airalo, for affordable and reliable service. Your local carrier might also offer a short-term international plan. Test your eSIM connection before you land in Europe by turning off your standard SIM and confirming it connects properly.

4. Check Your Passport Expiration

Don’t overlook this simple but vital detail: ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Some countries allow three months, but six months ensures trouble-free entry at passport control. Renew early for peace of mind.

5. Invest in Travel Insurance

Travel insurance adds a layer of security that’s well worth the cost. It protects you if you become ill, sustain an injury, or need to change plans due to family emergencies. From medical coverage to trip interruption, insurance can be a true gift of assurance when traveling far from home. After you make your initial deposit, our travel platform offers you two options for travel insurance. We recommend taking either of these or using another trusted provider.

6. Get Ready to Use WhatsApp

Although our treks focus on being present and unplugged, staying connected can be important for safety and community. We use WhatsApp on all our Pilgrim Paths walks to share photos, send location pins, and keep in touch if anyone gets separated. Before you depart, download WhatsApp and make sure it’s working on your phone. Once we’re on the trail, we can balance connection with reflection.

7. Train Your Body — and Test Your Gear

Most active travelers can complete our treks comfortably, but training makes every step more rewarding. Try walking 15–25 km (10–16 miles) two days in a row a few months before departure, then adjust your training as needed. Use these walks to test your shoes, socks, and gear — especially to prevent blisters. A little preparation goes a long way toward a happier pilgrimage.

8. Set Your Intention

Perhaps the most meaningful preparation of all is internal. Take time to reflect on why you’re walking. Some pilgrims dedicate each day’s journey to a loved one; others write in a journal, meditate, or use the time to heal or dream. With intention, your trek becomes not just a physical adventure, but a spiritual and emotional journey too.

At Pilgrim Paths, we’re honored to walk with you — body, mind, and spirit — along some of the world’s most historic and inspiring routes. Your preparation today is the first step toward a beautiful pilgrimage tomorrow.
