Our Siena to Rome pilgrimage invites you to walk one of the most memorable sections of the Via Francigena, traveling from Tuscany’s medieval heart to the gates of the Eternal City. This self-guided journey blends big-sky countryside, ancient Roman routes, volcanic lakes, tufa-carved towns, and the iconic final approach to St. Peter’s. Each day follows well-marked paths and historic lanes, supported by Pilgrim Paths’ e-guidebook by Sandy Brown and our Pilgrim Paths Navigo app with curated GPS tracks as backup to signage.
Your journey begins with a bonus day in Siena, a Gothic city of art, music, and narrow contrade lanes. Leaving Siena, the trail crosses the Crete Senesi and the rolling Val d’Orcia, weaving through golden hills, cypresses, and thermal hamlets like Bagno Vignoni. From the fortress tower of Radicofani, you descend toward Lazio, entering the ancient territory of the popes and the tufa towns of Tuscia. Quiet woods and hazelnut groves lead to Viterbo’s medieval quarter, while Bolsena and Montefiascone offer lakeside views and the famous “Est! Est!! Est!!!” wine.
Farther south, the path passes rock-cut amphitheaters and Etruscan tombs near Sutri before entering Veio Regional Park, a green corridor that guides pilgrims toward Rome. The final day brings one of the most emotional moments of the Francigena: climbing Monte Mario—Mons Gaudii—for a first glimpse of St. Peter’s dome. From there it’s a joyful descent into the Vatican and the heart of Rome.
Lodging includes hotel nights in Siena and Rome, and pilgrim dormitory accommodations along the route. You’ll walk at your own pace, collect stamps in your pilgrim credential, explore hill towns each afternoon, and savor local meals as you approach the Eternal City step by step. Buon cammino—your road to Rome awaits.
