This section of the Via di Francesco carries pilgrims from Assisi, the resting place of St. Francis, into the deep green valleys that lead toward Rieti, historically called the “Valley of St. Francis” for the many miracles, hermitages, and Franciscan legends rooted here. The route blends olive groves, medieval towns, Roman roads, and shaded forest paths, offering quiet beauty and a strong sense of walking in Francis’s footsteps.
Leaving Assisi, the trail follows ridges and olive terraces to Spello, famous for its rose-stone walls and floral balconies. The ascent to Trevi offers wide views across the Umbrian plain, with steep medieval streets and fountains welcoming tired pilgrims. Shorter days through Poreta and into Spoleto allow time to explore Roman arches, medieval churches, and Spoleto’s grand Duomo — a priceless stop along the way.
Beyond Spoleto the trail enters wilder country, following Roman routes toward the Nera river valley. Forest paths, stone bridges, and mountain hamlets lead toward Piediluco, a lakeside town beside calm waters and reflection. From here the ascent to Poggio Bustone is one of the great climbs of the pilgrimage, rising to a sanctuary where Francis prayed in solitude and found peace. The views across Lazio are unforgettable.
The final day descends into Rieti, a welcoming city surrounded by Franciscan sanctuaries and gentle countryside. A rest day allows pilgrims to visit the shrines of Fonte Colombo, La Foresta, Greccio, or walk the quiet riverside paths that frame the historic center.
Pilgrim Paths arranges overnight stays from Assisi to Rieti and provides Sandy Brown’s e-guidebook and access to the Pilgrim Paths Navigo app with curated GPS tracks. It is a journey of steady walking, art and history, wild nature, and deep Franciscan memory.
