If you had a chance to visit the world’s tallest human-made waterfall, would you take it? What if that waterfall was built by the Romans over 2000 years ago? Well, Cascata delle Marmore is that very waterfall and it’s located between Piediluco and Arrone on the Via di Francesco.
On the way from Assisi to Rome, climbing from the Nera to the Velino Valleys
Begin in Arrone, an ancient, lakeside, town (the lake is gone) and continue through Casteldilago, a lovingly-restored ancient lakeside village in its own right. So far the walk is nearly flat, at least until you climb up alongside the most amazing waterfall. Of course, you’ve timed your visit to coincide with the deluge itself, since otherwise the waters are diverted to the hydroelectric plant hidden inside the mountain. End the day in lakeside Piediluco, a be-castled town that is so scenic it makes the least talented photographer look like a pro. Piediluco is on the southern border of Umbria, and as you look across the lake you see the first hills of Lazio.
